words per line and readability in typography

Josef Müller-Brockman thinks seven words per line is ideal for readability
Ruedi Rüegg has similar opinion that forty to sixty characters offer good readability

These designers' arguments are but contradicted by some scientific studies explaining that long lines stretching from one end of ecreeen to the other offer more ease to users. However im with the designers' idea of smaller lines.(this doesnt mean the designers' studies are not scientific)

If you are a designer better follow the designer's opinion
