Wrap text around objects in Photoshop

27.11.09
Have you ever wondered how you can make a circle  full of text in Photoshop, or a triangular shaped paragraph or may be text wrapping around your photo cut-out. I just read this Layers magazine video tutorial on wrapping text around objects.
Think of a floated web page scenario with paragraphs and images with images floating left. I would always love to do it in HTML as its just a matter of a few lines of CSS . But in Photoshop while designing i always did some personal hacks to emulate such a layout. The problem is simple, I only know to make text

Seperate your css for different pages.

11.11.09
I have had situations when i wrote css in  a single page for similar pages in a site and later i had to separate out the css for different pages. It was both time and brain consuming task to separate the css even with help of firebug plug-in for FirefoxBut now i just saw yet another plug-in that can be used along with firebug to find unused css selectors for a page.

Paper Waste Days

29.10.09
I never noticed him living in my room before.. sorry dude !!!

Hi hi.... my one and only one room mate, but i never got time to even say a "Hi" to him ... I was really busy with design and other computer craps all the time. And at last GOD gave me the chance, he injected the wrong idea of updating my System BIOS and poor me, unaware of his intentions did everything as he planned. Not to mention, system was turned into something comparable to paper waste and me myself, another piece of paper waste.
One paper waste(PC) along with the other(me) will be lying in my room all the time, both silent and half dead(with music played from mobile in background). After going like this for a while we found that there is one more inmate in our room. He makes sounds and runs through the walls and roofs. Handsome fellow.... but is always naked. We paper wastes started watching him. Sometimes he will be on attention and will remain like that for long. Long means really long , i even fell asleep while watching one such stand still of my friend. But when he makes a move, he does it with passion. His moves are always filled with confidence and he makes sure whoever takes the pain of watching his endeavors feels that he is doing a serious work. I always felt he is doing some serious work while watching him during the paper waste days.
Its impossible to describe him without mentioning about his immense patience. Such a great guy with regard to his patience. With a prey at a distance of a few centimeters he waits for 5-10 minutes some times before even making an attempt to catch it. His HIT rate is really high , as long as i know him.
Yet another thing to notice is his attitude, it shows up when he makes a MISS instead of a HIT while hunting. If there is no chance of a HIT again he goes for a stand still again, switches on his RADAR and finds the new location of the prey. Moves slowly and again goes on a stand still at a close location.
Now don't ask me what if he fails in this attempt also. I really never saw him fail twice.
Here is a snap of Dude i took during Paper Waste days if u wish to see him

There is a lot more about my room mate, including his strange sounds and his fast/slow mode runnings. But I am no more bored to write about him as my PC is back after the repair.
I understood many things during these paper waste days. One important thing is that "I have nothing to do at home other that eating sleeping and going to toilet if PC is not working". Even to do a pencil drawing i need Photoshop open.

PS: "If you go wrong while doing BIOS update you computer will become a Paper Waste". I neglected this warning at some website to successfully enter my "Paper Waste" days.

An insight into using technology for education

28.9.09
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee to ever-widening thought and action -
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.
-by Rabindranath Tagore

When we have the technology to make knowledge free and accessible to a lot of people, when we have great faculties spread over our IITs and our great universities, what are we waiting for?

Vinod Balakrishnan : Adobe Photoshop engineer from India

11.9.09

It was bit more easier to get facts about 'Seetha', the third one to join Photoshop team. My previous post was about him and now i got a bit information about Vinod Balakrishnan also, including one good old photograph.

Vinod Balakrishnan had his schooling at St.George Mount School, Kaippattoor
Later he did his Bachelors in computer science at T.K.M.Engineering College, Kollam

Looking forward to get more details of vinod, which apparently seems impossible. Let me c :)

Got some more updates, Check out this Photo stream by Vinod Balakrishnan in flickr.
Also a snap of his kid Anuj can be found there.

I am also including a small preview image of one of his snaps there.

Seetharaman Narayanan : Adobe Photoshop Splash screen legend

I am among those huge amount of photoshop users who ponder daily on these names Seetharaman Narayanan and Vinod Balakrishnan. But there is a general difference in the reason why I gets stuck to these names. I definitely never felt these names long or weird (as most non-Indians do) but I feels close to them as i know they are Indians.
I tried a lot to know more about these two and how they managed to enter their names into the Adobe Ps splash screen. Google rarely helped me and it seems these two never took time to write down their stories. Unlucky me :(
Lately I found David's Blog and his interview with Seetharaman Narayanan. 'Seetha' seems to be extra ordinarily simple and humble in the interview. From whatever he replies to questions we feel him more close to us. A real hero as much as i know till date, the research about him still continues.
The weird thing i noticed is that Seetha did his bachelors and masters in Mechanical Engineering before he came to Computer Science.
If you love Seetha, don't miss this interview here

Toothbrush invented in jail?

"William Addis of England is credited with creating the first mass-produced toothbrush in 1780. In 1770 he had been placed in jail for causing a riot. While in prison, he decided that the method for teeth brushing of the time – rubbing a rag on one's teeth with soot and salt – could be improved. So he took a small animal bone, drilled small holes in it, obtained some bristles from a guard, tied them in tufts, then passed the bristles through the holes on the bone and glued them. He soon became very wealthy. He died in the year 1808 and left the business to his eldest son, William II."

got this piece of information from wikipedia while searching for something. the girl showing the use of toothbrush is also awesome :).

The Web Design Job A Simple Day

3.9.09
Goes to bed late daily now-a-days as i got a lot of things to update in the design world and web world both changing a lot daily. It is never possible to get all of a days updates in these topics, but i tries to get as much as i can, then go to sleep. It will be around 2:am when i finally goes to bed.

Also the month of ramdan is going on so i'm fasting during the day time .I cant simply go on fasting as I get up, need to fill fuel. . I'll have to get up at 4:30 am to have ramadan special food, thats 2:30 hrs away from my sleep. Eat as much as I can and goes back to my room.

From here two things can happen one is to switch on computer and browse for sometime and then get ready and leave to office. Other is simple and straight, sleep with alarm set for 7:30 and sleep till 9:30 finally reach office 1 hr late.

After reaching office there are a lot of things to do.Works start with thinking of some idea for a design. As I try to think nothing will work out as usual. So after some more thinking and rough sketches in my sketch book i makes myself understand that nothing is going to work out and tells myself, don't worry you know what to do!!.

Its time for inspiration, inspiration means pure inspiration there is no questions on that. Designers all over the world are actually inspired by others works. What i mean is that inspiration is not copying, its simply inspiration.

So nothing much to do, sites are already bookmarked in firefox css mania is the first in list, css mania showcases a lot of good websites, so browse css mania randomly ,get many ideas ,mix all good ideas and get a new design. You can even get"inspired" by color schemes in websites, no problem. So after some time u will come up with an idea of what to do. God!! job is somewhat settled, just settled not "done".

If I was not fasting(ramadan) its time for a tea. But unfortunately no tea this time. Move on to next step. Implement the design in photoshop. I simply opens photoshop and "f" key is pressed 2-3 times then i press " tab key" once , alas!! a screen with no mess appears,no toolbox ...no options...only screen and rulers and grids and guides. Its time to start work that is to make a .psd file of "how the web site looks".

This seems easy but consumes a lot of time and expertise. Sometimse expertise cross borders and i will be forced to refer tutorials on psd ut+ or some others, but maximum attempt will be done to avoid such extra work. This work can even take to more than one day.I have gone upto 3-4 days for a single work like this.

So after some hours or days you comes up with the design somewhat happy seeing the pretty output obtained. After spending lot of time simply watching the output and appreciating myself i shows it to boss. He make a thorough review of the design, appreciates the work and makes suggestions on improvising it or replacing certain things. These are actually the suggestions for the next "theme".

So its time save the work to "theme 12" folder and create a new folder "theme 13". Keep the reviews and suggestions in mind while doing the next bunch of "inspirations" and "design". This cycle can go on pretty long as i don't usually come up with a "best" design.

The funnier part is when the client gives feedback. If you are a designer you know it already, no need to explain.( If you are a real good designer i don't know how things are anyways).

Its fun to be designing all the day. Blogging, twitting, coding, eating and sleeping rest of the time. Only thing is that i am not getting enough time to sleep.

PS:I used to sleep 12-22 hrs a day before joining as designer.

Its already late by now "theme 14" need to be made tomorrow morn. :)

Apple computer's first logo featuring Issac Newton

Noticed this funny thing last day while browsing on a post about evolution of many corporate logos. In that, the first n formost of all apple logos features Sir Issac Newton himself and the "apple" which fell on his head according to the fables.
I actually had a misconception that Steve Jobs ate the missing part of apple's apple but after observing the evolving logos i understood that it was newton who ate the missing piece of apple. Anyways nice "first logo".
But did newton eat that apple or left it there and went behind gravity and then may be Steve Jobs came that way...or may be.........whatever......

Is google sucking sometimes? Need a semantic search inbetween?

31.8.09
Have your google/yahoo/bing misunderstood your search term and produced millions of results pointing in the wrong direction? And then you were left with no other choice probably. Yes its time for a semantic search, i dont guarantee such semantic searches to be extraordinarily intelligent. but tobviously much brighter than google and yahoo. Go for a semantic search atleast whrn yahoo/google/bing fails.

here is one such search engine hakia search

PS: I dont want to argue if this is really "semantic" :).
PPS: Here is a list of original "semantic searche engines" and comparisons if u are interested in what original semantic search is : Semantic search comparisons

The over the phone test for UI designs

Origianl article by aza featutured in his blog

One of the design heuristics we use at Mozilla Labs, especially as we work to create a more invisible browser, is the “Over-the-Phone test”.

If your friends have ever got it into their heads that you might be good at technology, I’m sure you’ve found yourself trying to explain some aspect of computing over the phone. Probably something trivial and difficult to explain. I give you my condolences. Trying to troubleshoot a GUI over the phone is like giving driving directions to train conductor.

For instance, it’s difficult to tell Grandma how to spellcheck in a web mail application that doesn’t have spellcheck:

  • “Ok, Grandma, select everything by clicking anywhere in the text and typing Control-A.”
  • “Now copy the text by typing Control-C.”
  • “Open Word by going to the Start Menu, clicking ‘All Programs’, clicking ‘Microsoft Office’, and finally by clicking ‘Word’.”
  • “Paste your text into Word by typing Control-V… No, Grandma, I don’t know why it’s ‘V’–maybe because ‘P’ is already used for printing?”
  • “Click the little icon on the top of the bar that has a checkmark and some letters. You don’t see it? Okay, describe what you see. You see something that looks like a coffee cup? I have no idea what that is. Actually, forget it. Just select ‘Spell Check’ from the ‘Edit’ menu.”
  • “Click ‘Start Checking’. Grandma, I know you just told it you want to spell check; I don’t know why you have to tell it again.”
  • (Time passes as Grandma spell checks her document.)
  • “Click the ‘Done’ button. Or maybe it’s called ‘Finish’. Uh, just click either the ‘Done’ or the ‘Finish’ button.”
  • “Select everything by typing Control-A.”
  • “Copy the text by typing Control-C.”
  • “Switch back to the email you were writing. What’s that? You can’t see the email you were writing? Well, um… Move some windows around and try finding it.”
  • “Is the text of the email still selected? No? Okay, click anywhere in the text.”
  • “Select everything by typing Control-A.”
  • “Paste in your spell checked text by typing Control-P. Wait, no, Control-V…”
  • “You’re done! wasn’t that easy?”

At every step something can go wrong, your mental model can get out of sync with the state of the computer, or you might remember a button name incorrectly.

Thus our test: We ask ourselves, “Would I be willing to teach my Grandma how to use this over the phone?”. If the answer is “Definitely”, we know we’re doing well; if the answer is “Maybe”, we know we can do better; and if the answer is “No”, then it’s often time to rethink the whole thing.

This is one of the heuristics that informed Ubiquity.

A MAD man with his MAD friends.

Acid Lullaby : Another great digital artist

Her introduction:
"Wen- Xi Chen paints tragedies in the dead of night to the sweet sound of Opeth and is a pathology student by day in one of the oldest and most hellish educational establishments in the UK. This leaves very little time for that activity known as sleep, and so exists in a perpetual state of spaciness.

She started to paint digitally at the age of 13 and, realising the number of expensive oil brushes she'd save from the consequence of not washing, has never looked back since.

Online, she goes by the alias acid lullaby, which is a quote from an interview with the band Placebo. So now you know, quit asking. Yeah, that's right, Wen-Xi loves to borrow names from musicians, you will notice that if you're an Opeth fan looking through her gallery."

Rithu Ritu or Eruthu or may be Erutu - Shyama Prasad

16.8.09

A film on relationships and their depths and changes with time. A deep look into true love at the right time, ie. when fakes are all around. The theme is fine but the film is not that fine, syama prasad wants to tell a lot of things but is his charachters telling them with the same intensity as the director has, i don't thik they have. There is no point in a simple 'audience' questioning a national award winning director. But audience is audience.
I do appreciate the man who designed those lovely posters which shuoul'd have attracted a bunch of 'visual' people to the 'cinema'. Some parts of close ups looked like the charachters detached from their backgrounds, not sure of the reason may be a bad focus or a bad color correction whatever i felt so, just "I".
There was a FAT guy probably Syama Prasads relative i think, there is no other way his charachter aride into the scene. Just joking, Shyama Prasad deliberately wants to take the issue of displaced people from IT parks into the film or may be he wants to stress the hero's Communism whatever ......It reminded me of certain Tamil movies introducing Vadivelu inbetween storyline.
The end of the story is a certain guess for those who have seen a bit of Hollywood movies, the book writer should dedicate, i was damn sure about that.
Syama, i expected a lot more, obviously my fault......
Syama Prasad told what he wanted to tell, we people heard there is no point in questioning the author.
But Syama, i spent 50 bugs to hear the story.

PS: If u ask me about the movie, I liked it much. But if Syama Prasad asks I would answer the other way.

Aug 04 2009

4.8.09
Alarm is of no use, i proved it again!! mom came from downstairs switched off alarm and called me. While walking to bus stop saw a boy running with his school bag as thogh he is going to miss his bus, if the time was 1 year back i would have stopped him and advice him not to worry about times. Somehow i dont have the "rights: to advice him right now, i ve also become a "regular" guy sticking to some time shedules. "Regular" doest but mean perfect solid state, may be its somewhere near liquid, anyway my old gaseous state(no time) is no more.

Days are great. I reach office after browsing through hundreds of young charming girls while in my 30 min journey. There starts the great job of switching on my good old brain, kept untouched for long period the crap acts weird always while starting. So it takes a while to make it run right. Once i feel i am on the rails running smooth i move on to the next job- what should i do now? I will check my recently opened document to chk wht i was doing last day. If i finds somethingin that well and good its time to furnish the half done design file, probably till i leave at evening. But if recent documents proves no good i will browse through the innumerable folder i created in my just 1 and half months works to find what i did last day, probably ill end up finding some work by myself this way. But if there is none ill have to change on to my last option, i turn over to my boss and ask him what should i actually do now?

He will be having no confusions straigh away gives off the answer and both of us happily goes deep into our works. The feeling of going deep into a work, sometimes forgetting the outside world is really enjoyable, obviously we can enjoy it only after you get out of that state and look back.

Yet another thing is the satisfaction after u gets impressed by your own works. "Did i actually do this thing myself?" I would sometimes ask after designing stuff. There is the other side also that is when you feel your work is not up to the mark, then you feel frustrated not because the work is bad but because you wasted lot of time to do that crap-this situation occur more than the other :)

Evenings are the time to decide whether to go to thattumpuram or g directly to home. Probably ill leave home as ill be tired by evening or else ill call someone to come and pick me up. Daily 5:30 to 6 is my time to leave, but i usually grab the 7'o clock bus after i found someone daily boarding the same bus, shez certainly older than me but still... :P

Once i reach home ill be doing more designs or drawing some pencil sketches. Watching movies are rare but i do find time for that too....

Waiting for tomorrow...

PS: My hair has grown beyond the limits, Now im like some Cave man

October Sky 1999

It was hard to find time to watch this movie as im getting busy with my tight shedules for some days. But after watching this film i felt really refreshed a real great movie, a movie which cannot be seen but only be felt.. wonderful...

words per line and readability in typography

30.7.09
Josef Müller-Brockman thinks seven words per line is ideal for readability
Ruedi Rüegg has similar opinion that forty to sixty characters offer good readability

These designers' arguments are but contradicted by some scientific studies explaining that long lines stretching from one end of ecreeen to the other offer more ease to users. However im with the designers' idea of smaller lines.(this doesnt mean the designers' studies are not scientific)

If you are a designer better follow the designer's opinion

Born in Switzerland in 1936, Ruedi Rüegg is an educator, writer and one of the most highly regarded Swiss graphic designers.

The House was in pin drop silence. I was brimming with
anticipation and
excitement!!!! Manmohan had informed me that my
introduction was one of
the important points of the agenda. I hoped that I will be
able to make

my speech properly. After so many interviews and
conferences, I was
nervous today!!!! After the Speaker indicated that the
proceedings of
the House could begin, Manmohan formally introduced me to
the entire
House. He mentioned that as the head of the Unique
Identification

Authority of India, I was responsible to ensure that each
and every
Indian had a digital smart card as a proof of his
existence.

Manmohan spoke about why I was selected and also some
references to the
various projects executed by me in Infosys were mentioned.
The House

listened with rapt attention. I was asked to say a few
words and I did
exactly the same!!! I thanked the Government of India for
having given
me this opportunity and I assured the House that I would
strive to
successfully deliver this project. The Speaker then
formally inducted me

into the House and before the proceedings could move any
forward, there
was a small commotion on the other side of the hall.

It was Minister of Textiles who had a comment to make
before the next
point on the agenda. He made a request that I should be
attired in a

more austere way instead of a flashy suit. It did not go
well with the
image of a minister who should live to serve the common man
and should
be less ostentatious in his habits. I stood up to reply. I
offered my

apologies to the Honourable Minister and assured that I
shall be in a
more acceptable dress next time. I felt that he was right.
We also used
to have corporate dress code in Infosys. So it's here
as well!!!!

I sat down and felt somebody nudging me. I turned around
and to my
surprise; it was the former Indian skipper and one of my
favourite
batsman Mohd. Azharuddin. I remembered that he had recently
won the
elections. I smiled at him and mentioned to him that I used
to like his

game very much, shaking his hand. No Rolex, I noticed.
Azhar told me
that he would "fix" me an appointment with an
Italian designer who had
designed his dapper Kurta suit. An Italian designer in
Milan doing

Kurtas!!!!! I made a note of this and reminded myself to
give this
example to Friedman for his next book," The World
Markets are
flattened".

Since there was no doubt about the "Fixational"
capacities of Azhar, I

told him to give me the details and I would consider. The
proceedings of
the House went on with numerous bills being debated and
passed as I sat
as a passive audience waiting for my project's turn to
come up. After

the lunch break, it was the moment for me!!!!

MY PROJECT"S FIRST REVIEW CAME UP FOR PRESENTATION.

I was at sea. My laptop did not have any reserve power. I
went to
Manmohan and apprised him of the situation. I was sweating.
He calmly

replied that this would not be a cause of concern. I was
flummoxed!!!!
The Speaker asked me to explain to the House on what were
my plans for
the Unique Identity Project. I replied that I have a plan
prepared for

30-60-90-120 days' milestones and I have presentation
to make for which
I need a power socket, a projector and a screen. I had no
idea what was
going to happen after this.

The next couple of minutes were a complete jolt for me. I
was completely

in a tizzy. Let me just summarize what happened. A Joint
Cabinet
Secretary Committee was set up to judge the feasibility of
my request.
The Under Secretaries for the Ministries of Power, IT and
Broadcasting
will prepare a Viability Report after scrutinizing National
Security

threats to my request. This was because the power socket
comes under
Power, laptop comes under IT and projector comes under
Broadcasting. I
have also been told to reconsider my timelines of 30-60-90
days and
start thinking in terms of years. Probably, they are right.
I did not

have the foresight in this matter.

The summary of the issue is that I need to come up with a
more
inclusive, democratic, comprehensive long term plan for
this project to
be executed over the next five years. I have also been
given a

presentation slot 3 months from now (by which the issues
related to the
power cord etc will also be resolved). I am filled with
mixed reactions.
I was planning for a quick resolution; the management wants
a strategic

solution. I come out of the House and text Murthy.

"You won't believe it but these guys work just
like us. I am on a
NATIONAL BENCH for the next three months!!!!!!!!"

Thanks
